We find ourselves using the word Gadget with gay abandon these days but what does the word really mean?

My dictionary says,

A small specialized mechanical or electronic device; a contrivance.
My Thesaurus says,

gadget : A small specialized mechanical device: concern, contraption, contrivance, gimmick, jigger, thing. Informal doodad, doohickey, widget.
